A.E.D. Arrives at I.S.S.

In December 2005, I.S.S. obtained a life saving piece of equipment to be used by all trained staff in the event of cardiac arrest. It is an “Automated External Defibrillator” or A.E.D.

An A.E.D. is used to send a small electrical impulse to the heart to get the heart back to beating correctly. For each minute the heart is in ventricular fibrillation decreases the chance of survival about 10%. So you can see that each minute counts in treating someone in cardiac arrest. In years past A.E.D. units were only utilized on paramedic & ambulance emergency response services. Now A.E.D.’s are being used industry wide & in the private sector.

Here at I.S.S. Joe Varela, Production Superintendent, is one of the American Red Cross certified instructors for adult C.P.R. & First Aid training. Just recently a handful of staff received training on the A.E.D. & the goal is to have all staff trained on the A.E.D. along with their Adult C.P.R / First Aid training.

For more information on how you can become Adult C.P.R / First Aid/ A.E.D. certified, contact Joe Varela at I.S.S. and ask when the next class is being offered.

Remember, it’s never too late to save a life.

A Face Lift for SEP

You may have noticed some new faces in the Supported Employment Department, like a case manager/job developer, and job coaches. The reason for the additions is that ISS is now authorized to provide employment services to referrals from the Department of Rehabilitation for community employment.

This service includes Vocational Evaluations, External Situational Assessments (ESA), Direct Placements (DP), and Individual Placements (IP). The vocational evaluation and external situational assessment are tools used to identify an individual’s ability and also assists the job developer in making the right job match. Job coaches provide long-term support for individuals that are working in the community.

Labor Department Announces up to $5 Million in Grants for Self-Employment Pilots for People with Disabilities

Goal is to Support What Works Well, Leads to Success

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) is making available up to $5 million to fund pilot projects aimed at increasing self-employment opportunities for people with disabilities.

"People with disabilities have much to offer in the 21st century and are able to contribute more than ever thanks in part to more innovative educational opportunities and technology," said Dr. Roy Grizzard, assistant secretary of labor for disability employment policy. "This funding will allow us, in partnership with others, to develop and test strategies and models for successfully increasing self-employment opportunities for people with disabilities."

A national technical assistance and research cooperative agreement award will be funded for up to $1.5 million for a 36 month period of performance. Sub-national research and technical assistance pilot cooperative agreement awards will be funded for a total of up to $3.5 million. Awards may range from $800,000 to $1,200,000.

ODEP'S unique mission is to provide national leadership by developing and influencing disability-related employment policy and practice affecting the employment of people with disabilities. Congress designated these monies to ODEP to further the development of self-employment policy for individuals with disabilities.

Developmental Disability Service Provider Rate Increases

The State budget reflects an increase of $68.4 million ($46.6 million General Fund) for a 3 percent cost-of-living increase to programs that have been subject to the provider rate freezes that have been necessary during the last three years. These include programs for which DDS sets rates (community care facilities, community-based day programs, habilitation service programs, respite agencies, and vouchered respite) and to specified contract-services programs (supported living, transportation, and look-alike day programs).
